A bespoke test methodology to accommodate new ADAS requirements

Case Study Overview

HORIBA MIRA was engaged by a major OEM to develop a safe and effective test methodology for evaluating driver drowsiness and attention warning (DDAW) systems.

DDAW testing is a new requirement brought in by the General Safety Regulations 2 (GSR2). There was no established methodology, so HORIBA MIRA engineers defined their own test procedure, drawing on experience of working on ADAS and certification testing.

Approach

Approach

HORIBA MIRA devised a methodology for the test requirements of the GSR2 regulations. This required a minimum of ten test participants to drive in the safe environment of the proving ground while self-assessing their level of drowsiness against the Karolinska Sleepiness Scale (KSS).

The drivers were trainined to understand and aply the KSS scale. Cameras were installed in the test vehicles for supplementary observations and tests were performed to ensure that the safety backup driver could safety bring the car to a stop if the driver fell asleep.

Initial testing on the DDAW system fitted to the vehcile helped the OEM to understand their current system performance against regulatory requirements and identify necessary modifications. Following development and updates, subsequent testing ensured the system performance met the required standard.

Successes and benefits

This project demonstrates HORIBA MIRA’s ability to respond to forthcoming regulations with an effective test methodology. Key points included:

  • Development of novel procedures ensured the customer gained valuable insights in pre-testing to ensure later compliance was met
  • Characterising the operation of the DDAW system allowed the OEM to better understand its operation to enable more authoritative supplier engagement
  • By identifying efficiency improvements during pre-testing, final testing was optimised to accelerate fatigue in participants and reduce test time
  • HORIBA MIRA sourcing and training of test participants simplified OEM project involvement

To carry out this testing we had to develop a whole new test methodology. We did that by combining the practical expereince of our ADAS test team with our Certification and Homologation group’s expereince of working with type approval regulations..
