By offering valuable hands-on experience to an increasing number of apprentices, MIRA is helping young people to gain a foothold in the engineering industry.
One of the people currently involved in MIRA’s apprentice scheme is 19 year old Samantha Goadsby; who currently works as a Vehicle Build Apprentice at MIRA’s Nuneaton headquarters. By combining paid employment with studying for a nationally recognised level 2 qualification in light vehicle maintenance, Samantha is able to progress her engineering career by spending one working day a week at North Warwickshire & Hinckley College and the other four at MIRA.
Samantha’s interest in vehicle maintenance began when she helped to fix a friend’s car and from that point on she knew that a career in engineering was the one for her.
After experiencing the variety of work that MIRA has to offer, Samantha is keen to encourage other women to explore opportunities in the industry.
“There’s lots of room for women to enjoy working in vehicle maintenance. My experience to date has been really positive and I am very excited about my future career.”
According to Samantha, the opportunity to work at a prestigious company and the hands-on experience offered by MIRA was a big factor in her decision to undertake an apprenticeship at the whole vehicle engineering consultancy.
“I chose to do an apprenticeship to gain hands-on experience in the workplace and that is exactly what I am getting. I get to learn through visual and practical demonstrations and the end product that I have worked on actually counts towards something. I am really excited about my future here at MIRA and my ambition is to have a wide range of qualifications to enhance my knowledge and to keep on improving my level of work.”
By donating three vehicles to North Warwickshire & Hinckley College’s motor vehicle workshops, MIRA has further enhanced the facilities already available at the college, giving students further opportunities to practice their skills.
